The Long Beach City Council on Tuesday voted to move forward with a policy that would allow recreational marijuana businesses to operate in the city in 2018. The decision comes as the first of over 100 medical marijuana businesses — including 32 dispensaries — begin to open their doors, and weeks before the state of California begins issuing business licenses for recreational cannabis. During Tuesday’s discussion, some officials said the city should wait until the medical side is fully rolled out before reevaluating whether to allow recreational cannabis, but the majority believed Long Beach should create policy now before the voters try to do so, as they did last year with medical at the local level and recreational at the state level.
